Trifling Sanctuaries In her fourth solo exhibition, entitled “Trifling Sanctuaries”, Sophia Hadjipapa explores the role and significance of viewpoint in painting. Redefining the traditional split between subject and object (the viewer and the painted image) the paintings show the artist candidly placing herself onto the canvas in ways that force the viewer to consider their own position and experience as a viewer and as a subject of someone else’s perception. The viewer is made to enter home interiors, rather intimate personal spaces like the bathroom or the bedroom, through her viewpoint and become a witness and a participant in private moments, even illnesses and everyday emotional upheavals. The series of paintings being exhibited began a few years ago with a sketch in the bath that made the artist contemplate on the small rituals that each one of us invents to lighten up our lives.
