INHALE/EXHALE
Inhale: (in’heil) vb. To draw (breath in) into the lungs.
Exhale: (eks’heil, ig’zeil) vb. To expel (breath out) from the lungs.
Inhale/Exhale is reminiscent of laboratories and hospitals, places of silence and whispering, where mostly cold color predominates and is a continuation of the preceding work entitled ‘Operating Theatres’. However this is far from a post-human high- tech world of genetic reconstruction and even that of science fiction. It is simply focused on mundane experiences using conventional medical equipmentthat in many cases are outdated.
Inhale/Exhale uses discarded found medical equipmentthat are then ‘rehabilitated’. These objects inevitably carry their own story, touching on different worlds: the world of subjective desires or fears, the world of the intellectual and the world of the mundane. The body here is absent in most of the installations. They are very much part of the body – thus the central theme becoming the human presence.
It could also be seen as a journey through female experiences, a means of communication of shared experiences. Emotions are the least understood of all the cognitive functions, and such meanings begin to take on a new interpretation: “damaged care”, “medicalization of life”, “prescription pills”, “doctor and patient relationship”, “embryos”, “sterile incubators”, “hospital beds”, “motherhood” (birth/ rebirth/ growth/ separation), “straightjackets”, “metamorphosis” etc. A fragmented knowing and seeing.Local gestures, global feelings
The work was originally conceived to form part of a short performative documentary film (15 minutes) viewed in the gallery embracing the art-works exhibited. The 19 distinct self-contained works are grouped spatially and conceptually into what could also become a single installation, organizing perceptions of the world. As one walks through the artworks, like walking through medical rooms, one can pass from experiences that may alter or destabilize the body’s experience -Layering realities. The 19 works are done in various media, including electricity, glass, metal (steel), fiberglass, water, salt, fiber and photography. The film is an abstract documentary that was shot on the Larnaka salt-lake and the artist’s studio.
